July Book Favorites

Hey Guys,

“So many books, so little time.” -Frank Zappa

I’ve always been an avid reader and keep a book with me at all times, I’m usually working my way through one fiction and one non fiction book at any given time. I knew when I started Sincerely, Mrs.JMM I would be doing a monthly post about the books I’ve been reading. I’m always purchasing new books and usually have a stock pile of them waiting to be read. I picked three fiction and one non fiction for the month of July.   Enjoy!

The Obsession by Nora Roberts

I received this book as a gift from one of my sons and finally got to read it last month. The Obsession is a thriller about a photographer named Naomi Carson,  as a young girl she discovers her father is a serial killer and ends up saving one of his victims. It follows her to present time and how she has tried to move forward from being the daughter of this infamous killer. When she thinks she can finally move forward to just live a normal life and find love, the past comes back in a big way. I really liked the characters in this book and was definitely cheering for Naomi and Xander to have a happy ending. Her two Uncles in the book were my favorite supporting characters, they were so loving and protective. If you like thrillers with some romance mixed in I would definitely pick up The Obsession by Nora Roberts.

The Husbands Secret by Liane Moriarty

I kept seeing this book in stores and on my Amazon recommendations list so I finally ordered it to see what it was all about. I’m so glad I did because The Husbands secret is now one of my favorite books. This is the first book I’ve read by Liane Moriarty and I really enjoy her style of writing, it definitely made me excited to read more of her work.

The entire time I was reading The Husbands Secret I was so curious how things would resolve themselves in the end. It seemed like a spider web that would be impossible to resolve which made me want to keep reading. The book is set in Australia and is about a woman named Cecilla who finds a letter her husband has written years before. Within that letter is information that could change everything for not only Cecilla’s family but others as well. It’s quite a build up to find out whats actually in the letter because it’s quite a few chapters into the book before you actually find out. I love that the author did this instead of giving it away on the first page. I really like the main character Cecilia, I can’t imagine what it must have been like for her to discover what she did about her husband. I would definitely pick this book up if you haven’t already read it. My Husbands Secret makes for a great beach or pool read.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

After reading The Husbands Secret I wanted to try another book by this author so the second book by Liane Moriarty that I picked up was Big Little Lies. This book has also been adapted into a TV Show Mini Series on HBO which I have not watched yet. I really enjoyed the book so it makes me nervous to watch the show, I feel like it’s never the same. Have you read the book and watched the show? Did you like it?

I didn’t want to put this book down! The opening chapter leaves you in suspense wondering what it means and the answer coming in the final chapters. This book takes us into the lives of elementary school moms.  What it’s like to be the new mom, the mom that has it all together and the mom that only looks like she does. I was really routing for Celeste through the book. I wanted her to find her strength. I don’t want to say to much so I don’t give anything away.

This is another one of those books that is great for lounging by the pool, taking on vacation or a long flight.

My Non-Fiction Pick of the Month

Unapologetically You By Steve Maraboli

I can’t say enough good things about Steve Maraboli, he is a world-renowned speaker who has been quoted over and over again. The book Unapologetically You is filled with quotes and short motivational passages spreading a positive message. Each one makes you stop and think why didn’t I think of that? It’s an easy read and something you could just take a  minute or two each day to read a few pages for the positive messages.

Some of my favorite quotes are

“People tend to be generous when sharing their nonsense, fear, and ignorance. And while they seem quite eager to feed you their negativity, please remember that sometimes the diet we need to be on is a spiritual and emotional one. Be cautious with what you feed your mind and soul. Fuel yourself with positivity and let that fuel propel you into positive action.”

“You were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self, to live out your purpose, and to do it courageously.”

“People will always have opinions about your decision because they’re not courageous enough to take action on their opinion.”

I have so many more but I will let you read the book and discover your own favorites. If you’re looking for some motivation or know someone who could use some positive words in their life this would be a great little gift.

What are you currently reading? If you have any books you love and want to recommend or if you read any of the above books let’s discuss in the comments.
