One of my favorite things to do with my family this time of year is to go apple picking at our favorite local family owned orchard. There is just something about the taste of a freshly picked honey-crisp apple and and fresh pressed apple cider this time of year.
I love to make lots of fun and delicious recipes with our bounty of fresh apples including this homemade applesauce. This recipe is so easy and can be made as a quick side dish for dinner to, I love to serve it with roasted pork tenderloin.
You can use any combination of apples but I don’t use any sugar in this recipe I just let the apple and cinnamon take center stage. If you want it sweeter you can just use sweeter apples.
Some of the combinations I use are three Pink Ladies and one Golden Delicious or if I’m using Honey-crisp I don’t add a sweet apple because they are the perfect combo of sweet and tart. You can also play around with the apple combinations until you find the apple combo you like and as an added bonus the house will smell amazing while it’s cooking!
4 apples ( 3 tart and 1 sweet if your using really tart apples like Granny Smith)
1 tbs. of cinnamon
1 1/2 cups of water
Peel and roughly chop your apples into medium size chunks.
Place all of the ingredients in a medium sauce pan.
Bring to a boil on medium high heat, then reduce the heat to medium low and simmer, stirring occasionally.
Cook until the apples become tender and break apart when stirred. About 15-20mins.
Remove from heat and mash gently with a potato masher a few times. You still want to have some nice chunks of apple so don’t over mash.
Let sit for 15-20mins at room temperature to allow the sauce to thicken.
Serve as a side or snack.
Refrigerate any leftovers and store in the fridge for up to a week.
